I am not a man of ideas nor am i gifted with rich expression. So when i started blogging, i decided i will borrow ideas. This, i hoped, would ensure regular entries. For first few days I posted a hindi or urdu couplet everyday. Often, with a small introduction of what i thought about it. But soon i stopped posting poems. I don’t know why. Laziness, lack of commitment, may be both.
I am going to start posting poems again starting with a few lines by Mahadevi Verma– the greatest hindi poetess after Mirabai. Both her poetry and prose are lyrical and steeped in soft human feelings. She lived a monk’s life after rejecting her child marriage and wrote beautiful romantic poems addressed to we don’t know whom–a man or the divine. There is a mystique (rahasyavaad). Knowing more about the writer would increase my appreciation for her writing. Alas! we do not have a great tradition of rich biographies in Hindi literature.
Jo tum aa jaate ek baar
Hans uthate pal mein adra nayan
dhul jaata hothon ka vishaad
chha jaata jeevan mein basant
lut jaata chir sanchit viraag
aankhen detin sarvasva vaar
Jo tum aa jaate ek baar!
