How Somalia’s Fishermen Became Pirates

April 19, 2009

In last few weeks, we have all read much about the terror of Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, a sea channel that is a conduit for 8% of global maritime trade flow. Somalia’s lawlessness and anarchy have been  blamed as the reasons. Ishaan Tharoor (One of Shashi Tharoor’s twin sons) of  Time magazine tells us how the pirates are not the only ones exploiting the anarchy.

He reports: “Somali waters have become the site of an international “free for all,” with fishing fleets from around the world illegally plundering Somali stocks and freezing out the country’s own rudimentarily-equipped fishermen. According to another U.N. report, an estimated $300 million worth of seafood is stolen from the country’s coastline each year”.

This is not all. Somalia’s long coastline has been allegedly used to dump nuclear and other hazardous wastes too causing all kinds of health ailments in the coastal villages in the country. Read the full article to know the other side of the story that seldom gets reported.
