Sir, I think may be this time the award was not a recognition for the performance in the past but a kind of investment in the future for global peace. May be the committe was trying to avoid "Be Nice to america: or we will bring democracy to your country." in the near term :)

I agree, the NREGA funds would be used wisely to plant trees - however the math just doesn't work for the Bihar attempt. Said BBC report claims 1 billion trees planted by 3 lakhs villagers within 12 hours.

Existing World record from June 2009 in Assam claims 447,874 trees planted by 300 army personnel within 24 hours. That was 1.157 trees per minute on average per physically fit army man on well prepared ground.

Pakistan snatched the title with 541,176 trees planted by 300 people in July, however it was mangrove trees simply plugged into very soft marshland.

Calculate the Bihar claim: 1 billion into 3 lakhs people into 12 hours into 60 minutes equals 4.63 trees per participant planted within every minute without a break! - rather not. Maybe it was about one crore trees and it can be assumed that BBC made a mistake with translating the term "crore" (10 mio) with "billion" as "crore" is rather unknown outside India?

cheers

I wonder if the people who advocate rainwater harvesting and small dams ever do the numbers. It is like expecting your corner cigarette shop to have a turnover of a billion dollars....its just not going to happen.

Shilp,

I enjoyed reading Freakonomics. But I am not too sure about the sequel. I have not read it yet. While Freakonomics was based almost entirely on Levitt's own work, the Super-sequel is a review of interesting works of others as you might have noticed in the excerpt above. That makes it less interesting. Nahin?

I felt kind of let down by Freakonomics... and I have a feeling it might be the same with the sequel. Nevertheless, I am going to order it from Flipkart. Did you read it?
