My mother quotes from this beautiful poem all the time. Her favorite lines:

I found it beautiful and always wanted to read the whole poem. Ma remembers only these lines. So, the search started. The poem was published more than fifty years ago in Dharmyug in 1957 and i could not find it on internet or in published anthologies. Finally, my dad obtained it from Nepali’s daughter-in-law who is trying to set-up an institution to preserve his works.
I am mighty pleased today as i post it on this blog. I love hindi but i have not learned Devnagri typing. Readers will have to read it in Roman script, which is inconvenient. Apologies! Also a couple of lines are missing from the 8th stanza of the poem. My dad photo-copied it from a photo-copied version he obtained from Nepali’s daughter-in-law. These lines were not clear in the original copy itself. If anyone remembers the missing lines, please do write to me.

I too hv heard a lot about Nepalijee from my papa and i remember kavivar Nepali Path in Bettiah and when i wl go to bettiah next time i wd b visiting tht place again
I remember two lines and i recite it whenever think about the socio political condition of our country

This is such a telling depiction of the life and times of women from a bygone era, though some of it may still be relevant today.
My mother knows this poetry and has also written prose for the same magazine Dharmayug much later.
She suggests a correction in one of the verses where it should read “jab baantein rewadiyan re” as in distribution of sweets, in the penultimate line.

Famous bhajan ‘darshan do ghanshyam nath mori ankhiyaan pyaasee re’ is written by Gopal Singh Nepali only for the film Narsi Bhagat(1957). It was sung by Hemant Kumar, Sudha Malhotra and Manna Dey. Music director was Ravi . But in a recent film ( slumdog millionaire) it is wrongly credited to Surdas . the language of the bhajan which is khari boli Hindi itself clears the doubt, if there is any .

I had the original cutting from Dharmyug. I somehow missed it. and was in search of this poem for more than 25 yrs. I was overjoyed when I saw it in this blog only yesterday. This is a marvellously put tale of an indian woman. I very well remember the two missing lines. They are:-

We loved the poems of Nepaliji. Among other poems, this was our favourite. I kept the cutting from Dharmyug (1957) but somehow lost it. I was in search of this for long, for more than 25 years. my joy new no bounds as a friend of mine showed me this poem on your site only yesterday. I very much remember the two lines that are missing in this reproduction. They are:-

I’m told that when Nepalijee recited this poem at a Motihari kavi sammelan, there was a pin-drop-silence throughout the recital – lashed with occasional ‘siskiyaan’.

It is an awesome creation of Gopali Ji, Each and Every line of this poem is strikingly sharp and sinking deep into the heart. I just amazed, How Gopal Ji had managed to pull together a train of emotions from the life of a woman. I feel, having the context of daughter is the most touchy part of this poem.

धरा रो रही है, बिलखती दिशाएँ,/ असह वेदना ले गगन रो रहा है,
किसी की अधूरी कहानी सिसकती, / कि उजड़ा किसी का चमन रो रहा है,
घनेरी नशा में न जलते सितारे, / बिलखकर किसी की चिता जल रही है ।
चिता पर किसी की उजड़ती निशानी, / चिता पर किसी की धधकती जवानी,
किसी की सुलगती छटा जा रही है, / चिता पर किसी की सुलगती रवानी,
क्षणिक मोह-ममता जगत को बिसारे, / लहक कर किसी की चिता जल रही है ।
चिता पर किसी का मधुर प्यार जलता, / किसी का विकल प्राण, श्रृंगार जलता,
सुहागिन की सुषमा जली जा रही है, / अभागिन बनी जो कि संसार जलता,
नदी पार तृण पर अनल के सहारे / सिसक कर किसी की चिता जल रही है ।
अकेला चला था जगत के सफ़र में, / चला जा रहा है, जगत से अकेला,

Nepaliji used to come to my home town almost every year before Holiday festival to be part of Grand Kavita Sammelan . This Sammelan was famous I the whole area. This poem became folklore in Bihar and used to be sung and acted very often . I have heard Nepaliji many times .
During one such trip he breathed his last . I am talking about Bhagalpur, Bihar where he passed away. I had an opportunity to pay my last respects to this great genius . I was only 14 years old , came home with a lingering disbelief that he is not going to come next year .
